On quiet nights

...when it's not so cold that the window can't be opened an inch or two; when the shit-heap Corollas with turbo transmission—that cough pitifully with each change of gears—aren't regarding every corner provocative; when the ker-thunkering trams only come every twenty minutes; when overhead police choppers aren't probing the streets with eerie fluttering searchlights; when the college kids have gone home for the weekend to visit their folks: you can sometimes make out the cl-clack of billiard balls breaking in the pub across the road.
